The Gem of the Sierra Madre

The town of Alamos, known affectionately as "The Emerald City," or, "The Gem of the Sierra Madre," is located at the base of Alamos Mountain at the confluence of several arroyos. In Spanish the word Alamo means cottonwood, and the tall trees that still exist in the main plaza are evidence of the lush area that the early Spanish explorers found in the 1500's.

Today, while in Alamos, one gets the feeling of stepping back in time. The colonial architecture, huge adobe haciendas, and the beautiful stone church are just a few of the many reasons why Alamos has recently been deemed a national historic monument and a Pueblo Magico by the Mexican government. Many days could be spent touring this old Spanish colonial treasure. Home and garden tours are offered and a walk through the state of Sonora Museum is a must.
